Introduction

Don't miss the opportunity to observe the transit of Venus on 08 June 2004 from Jordan! The AUASS and JAS are organizing a workshop for this purpose! The workshop includes a one-day scientific session in Amman to discuss the importance of this event as well as a description of the event itself! Also, the participants are welcome to present their papers in this session! Then the participants will travel to the desert to observe the event from there! Where the possibility of clouds is almost ZERO! Also, NEVER miss observing the sky at night from the desert, where our visitors are always impressed by the magnificence of our clear and dark sky! In addition, several excursions to some of the Jordanian ruins are included in the program!

Participation & Language

Participation of amateurs, astronomers, scientists, and interested persons from all countries is welcome for developing the international cooperation. Official languages of the workshop are Arabic and English.

Location

- Accommodation: Amman / Grand Palace Hotel (4-Star Hotel).
- Scientific Sessions: Amman / Regency Hotel. (5-Star Hotel).
- Camping: Al-Azraq Desert (150 Km East of Amman).

Program of the Workshop

• Sunday 06 June 2004:-
  • Scientific Sessions: Papers of the participants, importance of the event, information and data about the event, ...etc.

• Monday 07 June 2004:-
  • Travel to Azraq Camp. Visits to some ruins in the road, such as: Amra Palace (Which contains the oldest astronomical planetarium in the world), Harraneh Palace, Azraq Castle, Shomari Wildlife Reserve, Azraq Oasis. Kindly Click Here to know more about these touristic places.

  • Observing the sky at night using the telescopes of JAS.

• Tuesday 08 June 2004:-
  • Observing the transit of Venus from Azraq Camp.

• Wednesday 09 June 2004:-
  • Return to Amman: Discussion of results, conclusions & recommendations.

  • Visit to Jerash: A Roman City, 50 Km north of Amman.

  • Visit to Dead-Sea: The lowest point on Earth's surface; 420 meters below mean sea-level!

Why to Choose Jordan?

• Jordan will witness the entire event from the beginning to the end, and Venus will be high in the sky during the event, which will offer better observations!

• The sky of Jordan is clear during this time of the year! You don't have to worry about the clouds!

• The darkness of the sky in the desert is magnificent, where you can see stars up to the 6th magnitude.

• During your stay in Jordan you will be able to visit several interesting touristic places, some of which are already included in the program! Or you can easily arrange some visits to other places which are not included in the program; such as Petra, Wadi Rum (Where the rocks look like lunar rocks!), ...etc.

Registration Fee

• The registration fee for participants is 100 US$ per day, which will cover full board accommodation and local transportation. That means the total registration fee is 400 US$. The registration must be paid in cash at the Workshop Secretary.

• The fees cover a double room (That is, every two participants will have one double room). If a single room is preferred, then the participant is kindly asked to pay 15 extra dollars per day.

• The fees cover the stay in Jordan from Saturday 05 June 2004 to Thursday 10 June 2004. Each extra day costs 75 US$.

Deadlines

• All interested participants are kindly invited to fill the Pre-Registration form found below before the 1st of April 2004.
• Abstract of the contributed papers and full papers should be received before the 1st of May 2004.
